U-304

U-304

English version

The U-304 was a Type VIIC submarine launched on June 13, 1942 falling from his command in August on the LT Heinz Koch. His first patrol began to Kiel from the April 27, 1943 to patrol in the North Atlantic. Once in action area he formed with other U-boat, the Isar Group. One of its members, U-640, sighted an Allied convoy southwest of Iceland on May 11 and soon groups Inn, Lech were shipped with Isar to attack but lost contact with him two days later. Later the three groups joined with other U-boats arrived to the area to form two large Donau-1 and Donau-2 groups.

On 18 they headed south to try to intercept the convoy SC130 being sighted that evening by the U-304. The U-645 and U-952 tried to attack but the air escort the convoy avoided it. The operation was canceled on 20 after being two U-boats sunk by the action of the escort. The rest of the Donau group headed south to try to attack the convoy HX239. A escorting the convoy had joined the British aircraft carrier HMS Archer whose air crew helped end the operation to prevent leakage.

On May 24 Admiral Doenitz decided to cancel all operations against Allied convoys in the North Atlantic. The U-boat short of fuel, as the case of U-304, were deployed in a wide area making continuous movements and radio transmissions with the intention that the Allies subtilly had more U-boats of which there was actually. On May 28, the U-304 was located near the HX240 convoy southeast of Cape Farewell immediately under attack by Allied aircraft. It was finally sunk by depth charges dropped by a Liberator of the 120th Squadron. None of its 46 crew members survived the action.
