Under an order dated February 22, 1939, Krupp had completed six PzKpfw IV chassis modified to serve as posapuentes. Grusonwerk Berlin Krupp completed the required six vehicles on the chassis of PzKpfw IV Ausf C (Fgst.Nr.80435 to 80,440) between June and July 1939. The bridge was capable of a maximum weight of 21 tons, enough to withstand the weight of the PzKpfw III and other light Panzers were equipped with those divisions at the time.

On 14 November the same year Krupp said it was completing a Fahrzeug Versuchs along with four others and Magirus hired and asked to take charge of 16 other vehicles.
