Reichsverteidigung, la defensa del Reich

Reichsverteidigung

English version

With the entry into the U.S. war in 1941, Luftwaffe pilots had to deal with American heavy bombers first, then to his bodyguards (P-38, P-47 and P-51). The primary American bomber in Europe was the B-17 Fortress Flynig, but it was only other bombers also came as the B-24 Liberator and the B-25 Mitchell. Since the first clashes German pilots could see the difficulty of breaking down these behemoths armed with up to 13 12.7 mm machine gun and formations in which they provided fire support each other. Another point in favor of U.S. B-17 bomber was his formidable ability to absorb battle damage, despite being seriously injured were able to return to their bases.

Leaving aside the benefits, the advantage of the Fw 190 Messerschmitt Bf 109 was the Focke Wulf capacity to carry more weight, which translated meant more weapons, could support the installation of additional guns and face a greater chance of success against the heavy bombers. In mid-1943 the USAFFE had experienced rapid growth and the Luftwaffe had to respond to the increase in daytime attack on German territory. By late August, the JG 3 and III./JG 54 arrived from the Eastern Front, the I./JG 5 in Norway and the I./JG 27 and II./JG 51 in the Mediterranean, all equipped with Bf 109 G-6.

The first American bombing missions were carried out in broad daylight and without an escort, trusting that these qualities saved the bomber. Thus the October 14, 1943 a formation of 228 bombers belonging to the 8th Air Force launched a daytime attack on the cities of Regensburg and Schweinfurt. The fight went all Jagdwaffen elements present in the area have passed (JG 1, 5, 26, 51 and 54) shot down 60 bombers and injuring 121 others of varying degrees, 55 of whom could not fly again . With the repairs the losses increased to 118 aircraft lost. One of these victories was obtained by Kommandeur of I./JG 26, Hauptmann Karl Borris, and Kommandeur of I./JG 11, Hauptmann Clausen, raising two bombers destroyed his personal account to the 130 victories. But not all were victories, II./JG 26 was attacked by the P-47 escort and brought down the Wilhelm-Ferdinand Galland Kommandeur who had 55 victories credited.

In late September, fighter units were reorganized, now every Gruppe was made up of 4 Staffel, instead of 3. But this was more on paper than in the field, as each Staffel kept between 20 and 25 units available. Was normal, pilots newcomers barely survived its first combat missions, a ruthless natural selection. On October 14 a new formation of 375 bombers over Schweinfurt again to end the production of bearings in their plants. 60 bombers were shot down, 17 others crashed on landing and damaged 22 of the 121 were unusable. In total 99 bombers destroyed 30 fighters in exchange. On December 1 the Kommodore of JG 2 Hauptmann Egon Mayer, leading to III./JG 2 attacked a formation of P-47s shooting down three of them in just four minutes. Moments later a B-17 fell victim to their guns along with another shot down by Hauptmann Huppertz, a total of 27 American aircraft shot down in that action. However, the March 2, 1944 Egon Mayer died when his Fw 190 A-6 was shot down by P-47 when had 102 victories, including 26 four-engined bombers and 54 Spitfires.
